Aristotle had once said:

<blockquote>Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work</blockquote>

Also, quoting one of Murphy's laws:

<blockquote>If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization. </blockquote>

While I completely agree that love for technology is not needed in life, I firmly believe that this is absolutely an essential for those who write code. If there is love for coding, your work will turn out to be a form of art. Thats why probably Hackers take such pride in their work, like perfect arists take pride in their artistic masterpieces. Also, if you are passionate about something, you will not even care what you are getting "isolated" from. Because the word "isolation" means different things to each person. Every great person has had to make some amount of sacrifices (which they might not have felt so) in order to achieve what they achieved. If you worry about being isolated, when do you have the time to grow your passion?! Ofcourse, passion is completely dependant upon the individual, but I am referring to programming here.

While I agree with the need to have passion and dedication towards work, I dont feel we are "wasting our lives" if we fail to do so. Its wrong to be define our identity by what we do. Love of technology is great and beautiful, however, while one dimensionality brings us success in our careers, it isolates us from life, love and art. Agree?

Good thought!!

Probably great people are not much egoistic when it comes to accepting the limits of their knowledge. Because they know how much is still left un-invented. And they feel they have done less when compared to the mystery hidden in the vast unrevealed world. I do agree being in that mindset of "Passion" towards "Curiosity", will make a person eat, drink and sleep with that "Curiosity". In turn this passion to "Curiosity" sinks to the the bottom of the mind and heart, that's subconscious mind which keeps working for us. As Richard Hamming says in his speech on "You and Your Research" that "If you are deeply immersed and committed to a topic, day after day after day, your subconscious has nothing to do but work on your problem. And so you wake up one morning, or on some afternoon, and there's the answer". How true it is! We many time end up getting solutions from our sub-conscious mind, to our problems which we think passionately. The power of our sub-conscious mind is amazing! It's all about the passion, focus, dedication and persistence that can lead us to greatness no matter what field it is... I do remember someone saying... "Everyone has got the same brains... some use and many do not!".

When you question how his subconscious mind processed the solution for Einstein, you are beginning to unravel the workings of the subconscious and its role in assisting the conscious mind.
There's been a lot of work done in exploiting the subconscious in assisting learning, etc. The most prominent thoughts in the conscious mind sink into the subconscious, and then the subconscious activity in processing that thought comes out as insight.

You see, its not just the way the company was built, but also how they have consistently managed to stay ahead technically...if you recall some of the later chapters of the book, someone mentions how those guys had PDA's when other students didnt even have a laptop...
Again, its not just their academic mindset alone, they are pretty smart with money, plus, they followed the highway to success, they hired people smarter than them...many smart brains > few smart brains :).
Have fun!
